Materials
In this section, we provide detailed information about the metals we use, including 18k yellow gold, Swedish red gold, white gold, and platinum. You'll learn about the unique characteristics and beauty of each metal and how to choose the perfect material to suit your needs and preferences.
What metals are suitable for wedding rings?
The most popular metals for wedding rings are gold and platinum. When it comes to the visible differences between materials, yellow gold and Swedish red gold have distinct hues that can be seen with the naked eye. However, platinum and white gold are visually identical, with the main difference being in their composition and properties.
No matter which material you choose, you can trust that our experts will guide you through the selection process and ensure that you get a piece of jewellery that you will cherish for a lifetime.
What is the difference between 18k gold and 14k gold?
18k gold contains 75% pure gold, while 14k gold contains 58.3% pure gold. The higher percentage of pure gold in 18k gold makes it more valuable and durable. This is the material we use for all our wedding and engagement rings at Hanno Stockholm.
Will my red or yellow gold ring fade or change colour over time?
No, our 18k gold is a durable and long-lasting metal that will not fade or change colour over time. However, like all metals, it may develop minor scratches or scuffs with wear.
Can white gold turn yellow over time?
Yes, over time, white gold may begin to develop a yellowish tint due to the natural yellow colour of the gold alloy. However, this can be easily remedied by having the ring re-plated with rhodium, which restores its bright, silvery colour.
It is important to note that the quality of the gold alloy can play a significant role in maintaining its colour. We use Swedish white gold, which contains 16% palladium.
Palladium is a white metal that helps to maintain the original bright and silvery appearance of the gold over an extended period. This high palladium content contributes to enhanced colour longevity. This means that our jewellery, made with Swedish white gold, tends to retain its pristine colour for longer durations compared to pieces made with alloys from other regions.
What is the difference between platinum and white gold?
Platinum and white gold are both popular choices for engagement rings and other fine jewellery, but they differ in several ways. Platinum is a naturally white metal that is highly durable and resistant to wear and tear. It is also a denser metal than gold, which gives it a more substantial feel. Our platinum offers a premium composition that's 96% pure platinum, 2% gold, and 2% proprietary alloy ingredients to ensure the utmost in quality and durability.
White gold, on the other hand, is an alloy of gold and other white metals, such as nickel or palladium, that is coated with a thin layer of rhodium to give it a bright, silvery appearance. While white gold is generally less expensive than platinum, it may require periodic re-plating with rhodium to maintain its colour.
Diamonds
Prepare to find answers to commonly asked questions about diamond shapes, carat sizes, and the differences between lab-grown and natural diamonds. We also explain our certification process and how our certificate guarantees the authenticity of the materials used in our rings.
What is the difference between diamond cut, clarity, colour, and carat weight?
Diamond cut refers to the angles and proportions of a diamond, which affects its brilliance and fire. Clarity refers to the presence or absence of inclusions or blemishes in a diamond. Colour refers to the presence or absence of colour in a diamond, with colourless diamonds being the most valuable. Carat weight refers to the weight of the diamond, with larger diamonds being more valuable.
What is a diamond's clarity grade?
A diamond's clarity grade refers to the presence or absence of inclusions or blemishes in the stone. The clarity grade ranges from flawless (no inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification) to included (inclusions visible to the naked eye).
What is a diamond's colour grade?
A diamond's colour grade refers to the presence or absence of colour in the stone. The colour grade ranges from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown), with colourless diamonds being the most valuable.
What is a diamond's cut grade?
A diamond's cut grade refers to the angles and proportions of the stone, which affects its brilliance and fire. The cut grade ranges from excellent to poor, with excellent being the most valuable.
What is the best diamond shape for an engagement ring?
This is a matter of personal preference, but some popular diamond shapes include round, princess, and cushion. Our experts can guide you through the selection process and help you find the perfect diamond shape to suit your style and budget.
What is the difference between carat weight and diamond size?
Carat weight refers to the weight of the diamond, while diamond size refers to the dimensions of the stone. A higher carat weight does not necessarily mean a larger diamond size, as the shape and cut of the diamond can also affect its size.
What is the difference between lab-grown and natural diamonds?
Lab-grown diamonds are created in a laboratory, while natural diamonds are mined from the earth. Both types of diamonds have the same chemical composition and physical properties, but lab-grown diamonds are typically less expensive than natural diamonds. However, natural diamonds may have unique characteristics and inclusions that make them more valuable to some buyers. Lab-grown diamonds are on the other hand considered more sustainable.
Nature needs approximately one to three billion years to create a natural diamond. In stark contrast, a lab needs around just 8 weeks to produce a lab-grown diamond. Apart from these timeframes, the essential characteristics and chemical composition remain the same for both types.
Are your diamonds certified?
Yes, all diamonds above 0.3 ct come with a GIA, HRD, or IGI certificate, whether they are lab-grown or natural. These certificates provide assurance of the diamond's quality, authenticity, and value. Additionally, all our rings and diamonds, regardless of carat weight, come with our own certificate of originality. This certificate guarantees the genuineness of the materials used in the manufacturing of the ring, as well as the date and place of manufacturing.
Our rings are also stamped with our registered hallmark, registered in Sweden, which ensures that the ring is an authentic Hanno Stockholm creation. In addition, we include a yearly stamp on our rings, making sure that it's traceable and giving you peace of mind in the knowledge that your piece of jewellery is of the highest quality and authenticity.
Sizing
Here, we provide valuable information about how to find the perfect ring size, including tips for estimating your partner's ring size and instructions for using our complimentary ring sizer kit.
How do I find out my ring size?
The best way to determine your ring size is to visit a jeweller. You can visit our Stockholm atelier for an in-person sizing consultation. If you're unable to visit us, you can use our ring size chart, which provides a guide to measuring your finger circumference at home.
What if I don't know my partner's ring size?
If you're purchasing a ring as a surprise, it can be difficult to determine your partner's ring size without giving away the surprise. One option is to borrow a ring that your partner wears on the same finger and have it measured by a jeweller or with our ring sizer. Alternatively, you can try to estimate your partner's ring size based on their shoe or glove size, although this method is less accurate.
What if the ring doesn't fit properly?
At Hanno, we offer a complimentary resizing service for all our rings, although some styles may not be resizable due to their design. We recommend having your ring resized by a professional jeweller to ensure a proper fit.
How long does it take to get a ring resized?
The time it takes to resize a ring depends on the complexity of the design and the size difference required. Generally, resizing a ring takes one to two days, but it can take longer for more complex designs. In urgent situations it is possible to expedite the process and complete the resizing in just a few hours.
